"Chair with Uzbek hand embroidery - Suzani"

The name "Suzani" comes from Persian and means something like needlework. Suzanis are traditional embroideries and are elaborately made by hand. They are embroidered with silk or wool on cotton or silk fabrics. The embroideries serve as wall hangings in the houses and yurts of the nomads and are a traditional part of the trousseau for an upcoming wedding. The fabrics, embroidered in bright natural colors and magnificent, often floral patterns, reflect the philosophy of life of the nomadic peoples. Common motifs are flowers, blossoms, leaves, tendrils, fruit and the pomegranate.
