Valentine's Day on February 14th is known worldwide as a day of love and affection. But where does this tradition come from and why do we give each other gifts on this day?
The Origins of Valentine's Day
The history of Valentine's Day goes back to the third century. The priest Valentine of Terni secretly married couples, although Emperor Claudius II had forbidden marriages. Valentine gave the happy couples flowers from his garden as a sign of their marriage.
However, on February 14, 269, Valentine had to give his life for his faith and convictions. Over 200 years later, in 496, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as the memorial day of Saint Valentine.
The marriages he concluded were said to be particularly happy and long-lasting ā a tradition that shaped gift-giving as a symbol of love.
Over time, this gave rise to Valentineās Day as we celebrate it today.
Giving gifts on Valentine's Day is a symbol of appreciation. Whether it's flowers, chocolates or unique gifts - it's about expressing loving affection.
